Midwest Mission Distribution Center

Midwest Mission Distribution CenterDowners Grove FUMC returns to the Midwest Mission Distribution Center in Chatham, Illinois from March 2 to 4. The distribution center offers an opportunity for us to serve in our area and reach those in need around the world. It’s been just over a year since the devastating earthquake in Haiti and there is still need for support there as well as other countries throughout the world. Last year our group prepared much needed health kits for those in need. We also sorted and prepared basic necessities for packaging and shipping. There are a variety of projects to work on throughout the facility. Our help is needed as United Methodists reach out to aid the people around the world.

This Trip is open to adults and family members 11 years of age or older. The Center is located on an 8 acre campus in Chatham, IL, 4 miles south of Springfield with overnight accommodations on site. We will leave in the evening, Wednesday March 2nd and return Friday afternoon. To reserve your spot for this upcoming trip, contact Jim Gracey. Introduction to Mision Fronteras

Jeff and Debbie in BoliviaMision Fronteras (Border Mission) is the name of a mission being undertaken by DGFUMC members, Debbie Rissing and Jeff Wasilevich, in the Lake Titicaca region on the border of Peru and Bolivia. Working in one of the poorest areas of both countries, they will be helping local churches become resource centers providing economic support and other services to the indigenous Aymara and Quechua people.

To learn more about this project, how the Methodist Church is uniquely positioned to help, and how you can help, please attend one of their presentations at the end of January. Afterward, Deb and Jeff will offer samples of Bolivian and Peruvian food in Fellowship Hall.

Souper Bowl Sunday

Yes, we know it is Super Bowl Sunday on February 6, but our church will be celebrating Souper Bowl Sunday on January 30 and February 6.

We will be collecting money for the People’s Resource Center after all three services that morning. We will have soup pots labeled with the two teams playing in the Super Bowl. Choose your team, the Packers or the Steelers, and put your contribution in their pot. We will see how well our congregation can predict the winner of the game. No matter which team wins, the PRC will benefit from all the contributions.

Pots and Pans for the PRC!

Do you have any extra stickers leftover from the recent pot and pans promotion sponsored by Jewel? Bring them to the church office by this Sunday, Jan. 23rd. Sarah Circle will buy pots to donate to the People's Resource Center, a food pantry located in Westmont. Let's put those extra stickers to work!

Jombu Primary School

In 2008, the Missions Work Area received one percent of the congregation’s Growing Together contributions. Those funds, $20,000, along with $5,000 of the 2008 Easter Offering, were sent to the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) to build a school in Jombu, Yei County South Sudan.  The Jombu community provided bricks and labor needed to help build the school.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) conveyed the following to us from the ground in Sudan: "The Jombu people can not thank you enough for this gesture. This world is full of happy people - and you have contributed to their joy at Jombu. The building and community training you are providing through your gift will reach many generations."

Mission to Guatemala

UPAVIM Delegation in 2011

UPAVIMWhat are the lives of our neighbors like that share the same hemisphere? What do we have in common? How are we different? In an effort to understand the lives of the Guatemalan people, and they of ours, DGFUMC has sent several teams to live with members of the Unidas Para Viver Mejor (UPAVIM) Christian community in the impoverished outskirts of Guatemala City. We have also hosted two teams of women from UPAVIM in our homes in Downers Grove. UPAVIM is a cooperative association of about 88 women from marginalized areas. Some are widows, some were abandoned by their husbands, and some are dealing with alcoholism in their families. Many are sole providers of economic support for their families. They began helping themselves and their community in 1988 with a Healthy Baby program, then decided to create products to sell to generate funds. With those funds they have built a facility which houses a medical clinic with a pharmacy and laboratory, a daycare, a school from K-6th grade, a library, soy milk production, a bakery and rooms for the manufacture and shipping of their handicrafts. They are now working in a number of ways to achieve better housing, clean water, better education and health care for the thousands of people in their community.

  • More than 800 million people in the world go hungry every day.
  • More than 1 billion people lack access to safe drinking water and more than 2 billion lack sanitation.
  • In the last 50 years, almost 400 million people worldwide have died from hunger and poor sanitation – that’s three times the number of people killed in all wars fought in the 20th century.

The South DuPage CROP Hunger Walk is a 5 km (3.1 mile) walk held annually in October, with participants asking friends and family to sponsor them. The South DuPage community have raised nearly $970,000 over the past 37 years through holding this annual CROP Hunger Walk, which helps to support the grassroots, hunger-fighting development efforts of Church World Service (CWS) partner agencies in more than 80 countries. CROP Hunger Walks help to provide tools of hope that empower people to meet their own needs. From seeds and tools, to wells and water systems, to nutrition-enhancing Moringa trees, to technical training and micro-enterprise loans, the key is people working together to identify their own development priorities--something CWS has learned through 75 years of working in partnership around the world.

Community Adult Day Center

Community Adult Day Center (CADC) is a not-for-profit organization serving DG and surrounding communities. The center provides a dignified and pleasant environment for any adult needing daytime care and is an alternative to full-time in-home care. Clients enjoy a warm, supportive atmosphere, creative program, nutritionally-balanced meal, and an opportunity to share with others of the same age group, as well as social activities, including physical exercise, field trips and current events programs.
