Guatemala Connection Informational Meeting

Welcome from the women of UPAVIMA delegation from our church will visit the women of UPAVIM in Guatemala City from July 6th through the 14th. This is a different kind of mission trip where we offer ourselves and our friendship rather than our building skills and material wealth. During our time in Guatemala, we will spend a few days living in the homes of some of the women, discovering the delights of their culture and the hardships of living on the margins of society. We will witness their courage, strength and faith in God and we will be changed! In the past few years, we have begun to share how we can work together to build a better world and we are working on a joint project to help the women reopen their medical laboratory at the clinic within UPAVIM.

Ray and Ina Osborn, who participated in the 2008 delegation and will be going again this year, will lead an informational meeting on Sunday, March 6. Under-18s need to be accompanied by a parent and we already have a family considering this; you do not need to know Spanish as a translator is provided. Most of the cost of the trip is covered by fundraising that we’ve already done, but participants will be asked to fund their own airfare and some expenses, which will amount to around $550. Anyone who might be interested in join in this mission or just wants to find out more is invited to attend.

Ash Wednesday Dinner

NIU Wesley Foundation

College students from the Wesley Foundation at NIU invite you to a Soup & Sandwich dinner fundraiser on Ash Wednesday, March 9 at 5:30PM in the gym. Funds will go towards their social justice spring break mission trip to Washington, D.C. On their trip, they are meeting up with two other Wesley Foundations (Arizona State University and WinthropCollege, South Carolina) and the United Methodist General Board of Church & Society to learn about immigration and human trafficking. Part of their mission trip includes time for students to talk to Illinois legislators about these social justice issues. This is an exciting opportunity for N.I.U. students and they invite you to partner with them!!

The women of UPAVIM in Guatemala City have given us a great new way to keep in touch with them! You can read their first newsletter online with details of their current projects, including the construction of a new floor that will help them set up a new program for the elderly, exciting news of their first college graduate, and new photos.

100% of your registration fee will go to buy a net to save a life by preventing malaria in Africa.

Dine Away Hunger

Dine Away HungerOn February 23, Dine Away Hunger will be held at Ivy Restaurant, 120 N. Hale Street, in Wheaton. Ivy will donate 10% of their sales that day to the People's Resource Center's food pantry, so come for lunch or dinner and help fight hunger in DuPage County.

DuPage United Update

DuPage United

DuPage United came together on January 30th to listen to current member institution’s concerns. Those attending were from churches, mosques, synagogues, non-profit agencies, and associations from the greater DuPage county area. Listening sessions where individuals share societal concerns on behalf of the institution they represented were conducted amongst all attending. This was the first step in determining the topics DuPage United members consider supporting in the coming months. The next time DuPage United members meet will be to determine who will lead issues below and strategize together on how to move forward. Please take a look at the issue list and see if you find yourself called to one or two and consider attending the next meeting. Thank you to all who spoke about issues that concerned you enabling them to be voiced at the listening session. Please stay tune for the next meeting date, place, and time.

  • DuPage zoning issue around religious institutions
  • Interfaith relations
  • Political reform: transparency and accountability
  • Education quality, accessibility, and method of funding (property taxes...)

Thank you for making the effort to bring your stickers to the church office so that UMW/Sarah circle could buy pots and pans. You may have only had a few to share, but all of them combined, a little over 920, bought a lot of pots and pans. We were able to buy for eleven cents- 5 stock pots and 6 frying pans. The Peoples Resource Center will be delighted to receive our donation.

  • How can we do ministries that relate to our communities’ needs and aspirations, connecting with our brothers and sisters so that we can do together what we might not be able to do or carry out alone?

Listen, Link and Launch is a hands-on experience of listening to a community, finding new tools for listening, combining resources, launching ministries that can involve people who aren’t already part of faith community. Bring money for lunch, a heart for reaching out, good shoes for a light walk, and creative imaginations for collaborating with others in seeing new possibilities for Church.

Guatemala Connection

UPAVIMasDuring Advent last year, many of you stopped by our table in the Parlor to look at and purchase some of the beautiful handmade crafts made by the women of UPAVIM. It was also a wonderful opportunity for those of us selling the crafts to share our experiences of our visits to Guatemala City and our relationship with these women. Some of you were able to purchase something made by one of the women you’d met when they visited us in November 2009. I hope that you and your friends who received these gifts are enjoying using them knowing that they have made a difference in the lives of the people of La Esperanza, a slum on the outskirts of Guatemala City where UPAVIM runs its cooperative. For many of the women, the income from the craft making is the only support for their families.

Thank you for your support in raising $2,500 toward our mission.

UVC is a coalition of groups and individuals within the Northern Illinois Conference of the United Methodist Church. Your gift will help with the work of ChildServ, United Methodist Youth Services, Marcy-Newberry Association and Rosecrance Health Network.
