Gift of Appreciation

Presentation of the AguayoJeff Wasilevich and Debbie Rissing, members of our congregation and Volunteers in Mission at Mision’ Fronteras on the Peru/Boliva border in the Lake Titicaca region high in the Andes Mountains, have given a beautiful woven cloth, an aguayo, as a gift of appreciation to DG-FUMC, the Missions Work area, the Board of Gifts & Bequests and the individuals who support the work of Mision’ Fronteras.  The aguayo was presented at worship services on March 24, by Pastors Greta and Jim McDonald and Missions Work Area chair, Jean Krusinski.

Easter Offering

On Sunday, March 31, we will worship with full hearts, proclaiming to the world that “Christ is alive!”  Easter is a wondrous celebration of Christ’s Resurrection and the promise of eternal life. And it is a time to remember that Jesus came to heal and provide hope to all.

Each year we invite our congregation to help carry out this mission of hope and healing by participating in our Special Easter Offering which funds the Rainbow Covenant giving of the DGFUMC Missions Work Area. Your Easter gifts will make a critical difference in the lives of individuals in northern Illinois, as well as in national and global United Methodist missions programs.

Jesus calls us to bring healing and restoration wherever we can.  Let us celebrate Christ this year with even greater passion and live out our calling together.

Adult Mission Scholarship for 2013

Ever think about taking a mission trip somewhere? Giving your time and energy to others in a new way?

The Missions Work Area is offering a $1,000 scholarship to an adult member of our church who wants to embark on a Christian mission trip in the coming year. Guidelines are specified on the application form found below.

Applications are due to Jean Krusinski by March 15, 2013.

Special Mission Event - Welcome Home Jeff and Debbie

You are invited to hear an exciting update of the mission work that Jeff Wasilevich and Debbie Rissing have been accomplishing in Bolivia and Peru during the past year.

Through pictures and stories, you'll hear about how Debbie and Jeff, as United Methodist Volunteers in Mission, have helped greenhouses to be built and become a source of sustaining income for people in poverty; about children receiving the needed supplies that allow them to attend school; about equipping local residents to serve their community with basic health-care knowledge and supplies; about worship in a much different context than our own, and much more.

The program, which will be about one hour, is sponsored by our congregation's Mission Work Area.

We are excited to welcome Debbie and Jeff during their weeks back in the States

The Missions Work Area is leading the way in helping victims of Hurricane Sandy with a $1,000 donation to UMCOR – The United Methodist Committee on Relief.  You too can make a donation:

  • by clicking here

or

  • giving  your donation check to the church to be added to the Missions donation (clearly mark that it’s for UMCOR/Hurricane Sandy)

    or

  • texting the word RESPONSE to 80888 to give an immediate $10 donation.

The Giving Tree

The Giving TreeThe Giving Tree will be up in the Parlor beginning Sunday, November 11th. You have the opportunity to choose tags from several agencies in order to purchase gifts for both children and adults. The tags are marked with the name or initials of the agency.

All gifts going to PADS should be UNWRAPPED, but with the tag firmly attached.

Gifts to the other agencies work a little differently. Please select tags and put your name on the sign-out sheet.

The gifts for all the agencies other than PADS should be returned with the tags firmly attached NO LATER THAN NOON ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 2nd. Gifts for PADS will continue to be collected into December.

The Children and Family Ministries Work Area and the Church and Society Work Area sponsor the Giving Tree project. Over 300 gifts go to needy children, youth, and adults in our township and across the Northern Illinois Conference. We hope that you will be able to help.

Alternative Gift Fair

What do you buy the person who has everything? How about a goat, a beautiful South American craft, or a share in the aid work being done to help people in more than 100 countries around the world?

The Advent season is filled with many warm traditions, and one of those traditions at First United Methodist Church is the Alternative Gift Fair. Many of you are familiar with the beautiful crafts handmade by the artisans of our church's Guatemalan sister organization, the UPAVIM (United for Better Living) cooperative. These are gifts that give twice – your family and friends will enjoy receiving these lovely items, and you will also be supporting improvement projects in UPAVIM’s impoverished home community of La Esperanza in Guatemala City. We have a large selection to choose from - colorful bags of all sizes, scarves, Christmas ornaments, kitchen accessories, jewelry, and more.

You can also purchase livestock to combat world hunger as part of Heifer International, handcrafted items from the Peru-Titicaca Border Ministry, and help support the United Methodist Committee on Relief. Best of all, you’ll be able to check off a few more names on your holiday gift-giving list while making a difference in our world. What a perfect way to celebrate the true meaning of Christmas!

Children Will Learn About Helping Others

Kim Holler, Missions Work Area member, is teaching a “helping others” segment for children in grades 1-4 in Sunday School classes this fall. She will focus on how and why we help at the People's Resource Center, especially giving food and gifts to make birthday bags for children in need.

To complement her teaching, the Missions Work Area will make a $300 donation to the PRC to also be used for children's birthday bags.

Sunday School students will be encouraged to donate: cakes mixes, tubs of frosting, new small toys for all ages and gift bags. Members of the congregation are also encouraged to help in this effort by donating from the above list. Place donations in the "PRC Birthday Box" which will be next to the regular PRC bin near the church office.
