Recent News

We had a lot of fine work done on the 2nd Saturday of the month in October and I want to call it to the congregation's attention. We were able to work hard at the parsonage and got a ton of exterior work done.

We removed 100's of walnuts. We gathered twigs and limbs to burn. We edged and trenched trees in the back yard and planted hostas. We cleaned up and weeded several flower beds. We got 18 old "PADS" matresses thrown away. We got some electrical work done and some work done in the shower areas. We washed about half of the Rent-a Tent chairs. All in all a very busy and productive morning.

We had 17 in attendance....they are Dave Shultz, Terry and Tyler Bleau, Andrea Schwartzers-Polites, Tom and Karen Wagner, Pete Wildman, Don and Devra Dunham, Don Safford, Mark and Ellen Pitstick, Alan DeBral, Scott and Chris Hudson, Ward Feste, and Scott and Renie Curry.

Thanks to all of you for your outstanding efforts. We worked hard and enjoyed each other'scompany and fellowship. Let's keep the ball rolling.....this is the best attendance we have had in several months. Bring family, friends and kids.....we challenge you to be good stewards in SERVICE towards the upkeep and maintenance of OUR church. We meet every 2nd Saturday of the month for continental breakfast, fellowship and designated work from staff, trustees, and SOS coordinators.

During this S.O.S. event we saved the church about $1,000 in labor expenses.

October 16th is Laity Sunday, celebrating the active leadership and involvement of the laity both inside and outside our church. Services will be lead by Julie Stone & Don Dunham with the message given by Terry McDorman. The last service will be followed by the Harvest Fest luncheon.

It is that time of the year again to begin the movies. Everyone knows of the Cannes Film Festival, the Tribeca Film Festival, the Sundance Film Festival, but soon to be world known will be the Slowdance Film Festival. All the other festivals come and go in a few days or a few weeks, but no, the Slowdance Film Festival takes eight to nine months to be held. The movies might be fast and furious, slow and easy, touching or comedic but the discussions by our fabulous leaders are always interesting and the fellowship after the movie is quite wonderful. The Slowdance Film Festival begins in October.

Each month on the Third Friday of the month we host a movie in our home theater. It has been going on for about 10-11 years now and is open to all church goers. There are seats for 25 available by signing up through the church office. Sign-up starts at the beginning of the month each time. We will begin the season in October on the 21st with the movie starting at 7:30 PM. The last date will be in May on the 18th with the grand Golden Gung Ho Chinese buffet dinner before the movie. We ask for a two dollar donation to cover pop/water/popcorn and desserts.

If you would like to bring a friend along that is fine. Even bring a spouse if you would like or a significant other. We are asking that when you sign up to give us/the church your email address so that we can contact you if plans suddenly change for any given movie. We will use the email addresses only for movie info notification or change of date.

The movie titles will be published each month online and in the Bulletin and Tower Bells.

What has DuPage United been doing? Since the June 16th Delegate Assembly with DuPage United, the following has occurred:

• Billing Signing - Governor Quinn signed the bill allowing county boards to require all appointed commissions to submit financial, contract and personell information.
• DuPage United awared the Interfaith Unity Award by the Islamic Society of North America for our work in interfaith and justice.
• Zoning Board of Appeals held a public hearing on the text amendment restricting religious institutions in residential county land. More partners have stepped up on this issues. The Council of Islamic Organizations of Greater Chicago submitted a formal memo with recommendations to make this amendment less restrictive. DuPage United supported this memo.
• Action teams have met to continue research and establish strategies: English as a Second Language / Jobs and Job Training; Government Reform/ Forest Preserve; Youth after school programs. TBA: Transportation issue for seniors/ disabled
• DuPage United was awarded $50,000 grant from Catholic Campaign for Human Development.
• A team of leaders from DuPage United, Lake County United, United Power for Action and Justice met with Minority Leaders of the IL House and Senate (Rep Cross and Sen Radogna) to discuss a working relationship on our important issues.
• Starting in September DuPage United will have a full-time intern for 6 months - paid for primarily through the Jewish Funds for Justice.
