PADS Help Needed!

The needs for PADS has changed this season to families and children in crisis. We are in need of family monitors EVERY Tuesday from 6PM-9PM. If you can help out, please contact Diane Kerr at diane@dgfumc.org. Thanks to EVERYONE for ALL your support for this mission!

The Giving Tree

The Giving TreeThe Giving Tree will be up in the Parlor beginning Sunday, November 13th. You have the opportunity to choose tags from several agencies in order to purchase gifts for both children and adults. The tags are marked with the name or initials of the agency.

All gifts going to PADS should be UNWRAPPED, but with the tag firmly attached.

Gifts to the other agencies work a little differently. Please select tags and put your name on the sign-out sheet. All gifts for Marcy Newberry and Head Start should be wrapped. Child Serv gifts should be unwrapped. Please read the note on the tag to see which kind you have chosen. Please don’t wrap gifts marked “unwrapped” or volunteers will have to unwrap them before giving them to the agency.

The gifts for all the agencies other than PADS should be returned with the tags firmly attached NO LATER THAN NOON ON SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4th. Gifts for PADS will continue to be collected into December.

If you have any questions, please contact Nancy Bifulco at nbifulco@msn.com or 630-241-3530.

The Children and Family Ministries Work Area and the Church and Society Work Area sponsor the Giving Tree project. Over 300 gifts go to needy children, youth, and adults in our township and across the Northern Illinois Conference. We hope that you will be able to help.

Thank you!

175th Celebration Commemorative Items

175th Anniversary LogoThere is only a limited supply still available of the church’s 175th Celebration Mugs and Ornaments. Remember these are great gifts ideas for any occasion. They will be available in the parlor on the three Sundays prior to Christmas and at other times you may purchase them in the church office.

Emphasizing our long history of worship in Downers Grove, the black and white mugs come alive with rich colors when hot liquid is added. Like magic, scenes of the early log cabin in the woods along with a full view of the current church are revealed.

The custom designed etched glass ornament can also be used as a sun catcher. The church’s bell tower is featured along with the 175th theme of “Celebrating Our Past; Committed to Our Future.” It is a special keepsake of historic significance.

Each of these Commemorative items is a lasting gift for only $10.00. If paying by check, please make payable to First United Methodist Church with the designation of 175th Celebration.

There are also 175th Commemorative historical booklets still available. A $2-$5 donation is requested to cover printing costs.

Successful Year for Youth InTent Program

Youth InTentThere were many weddings, graduations, birthdays and anniversaries this year, meaning a busy year for Don Dunham, Bruce Ritter, 39 youth and a number of parents who assisted in the Youth InTent program this year. Nearly $20,000 in tents, tables and chairs rentals from 63 clients provided revenue to the youth program and earned participating students credit toward future mission trips and choir tours. Three new tents were purchased to keep up with the demand. There were several weekends when practically the entire inventory of eight tents, 26 tables and 200 chairs were in use and others where the same tent was set-up and taken down multiple times over a two or three day span. A very special word of gratitude is expressed to Tim Hopkins, who for the third straight year graciously donated the use of his utility van for towing the trailer and storing chairs.

If anyone knows of an available cargo van for 2012, please contact Don Dunham.

Information about the program is available in the church office and on the web site.

Jonathan Dean's Heritage Class

Jonathan DeanLay Speaker Academy is a time to gather with others from the UMC Aurora District to learn and grow in faith. Rev. Jonathan Dean will be leading a class on Heritage, i.e. how John Wesley started the Methodist church. I took it in the spring, and wholeheartedly recommend it!

Environmental Stewardship Corner

On Sunday, October 9, some of us heard a presentation regarding electrical supply options that you can choose now. In fact, you can pick an electrical supplier that is less expensive and that uses more renewable energy sources than is currently in the mix for the supplier you most likely still have. If you switch electrical suppliers, you still will receive your bill from your current utility, but the place on the bill where you are charge for your energy, will be passed through to the supplier. After you change electrical supplier, you will notice nothing, except probably a less-expensive supply charge and a lower bill.

To evaluate your options, you can go to the website: http://www.pluginillinois.org.

We were encouraged to learn that Illinois is requiring all electricity suppliers to have an increasing, albeit still small, fraction of their supply to come from renewable sources. Currently, in Illinois, most of this is from wind turbines. However, beginning in 2016, utilities will be required to start having some of their electrical supply from solar energy. I recently selected a supplier that was more than 15% less expensive than my current electrical supplier and produces most of its energy from renewable wind energy. Also, important to me, was flexibility in my supplier. The electrical supplier that I selected does not have any guarantee period or contract period, so if I want to change my supplier, I can easily change. Selecting an electrical energy supplier with a large portion of its supply from renewable sources will help bring about cost-effective change for all and will help lessen our impact on the environment.
