Friday Night at the Movies: Big

Discussion Leader: Don and Caryl Safford

If you saw the recent Tower Bell article, you know we have a new twist this year, the 3 + 2 + 2 series, featuring two movies from three actors:  Robert De Niro, Tom Hanks, and Meryl Streep.

On September 20, we lead off with Big, a 1988 fantasy comedy representing some of Tom Hanks’ earlier work.  It’s the story of Josh, a 12-year-old New Jersey boy who, after being turned away from a carnival ride for being too short, makes a wish “to be big” at a fortune-telling machine…..and gets his wish.

Also starring Elizabeth Perkins and Robert Loggia, and directed by Penny Marshall, Big was nominated for 2 Oscars and garnered other film awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Actor for Hanks.

Soft drinks, popcorn, dessert and coffee will be provided; a $2 donation is suggested.

Sign-up begins September 1 in the church office or using the form below.

Friendship Sunday

Celebrate Friendship Sunday
“Bring a Friend, Make a Friend, Reconnect with an Old Friend!”

"My neighbor mentioned that she wants to visit church with me sometime. That was several months ago and now I’m a little shy about asking her to come with me."
Celebrate Friendship Sunday: "Bring a Friend"

"I sit in the same pew each week near someone who has kids and is close to my age. I wish I had a chance to chat for a few minutes but we both seem to have places to go when the service is over."
Celebrate Friendship Sunday: "Make a Friend"

"I used to be in the TnT group, but now I’m old enough for the 40’s and 50’s group! It would be so nice if I could find time to catch up with my old TnT friends."
Celebrate Friendship Sunday: "Reconnect with an Old Friend"

If each one of us commits to attending DGFUMC on Sunday, September 29th and doing just one thing: "Bring a Friend, Make a Friend, or Reconnect with an Old Friend" we will all share in an amazing and powerful connection with each other and with our Church. Come and be part of this special celebration of friendship and unity!

Friday Night at the Movies: Save the Tiger

NEW DATE : Friday, May 24 at the Safford Home Theater

Discussion Leader: Carol Lysne

I saw this movie in 1973, 40 years ago. One scene in particular had a profound effect upon me and I never forgot it. When I learned we were showing academy award movies this season, I immediately remembered Jack Lemmon’s performance in Save the Tiger and wondered if it would still have the same impact on me. I watched it for the second time. It did.

Save the Tiger follows a day and a half in Harry’s life. Jack Lemmon plays Harry Stoner, the owner of a dress manufacturing business, who sees himself as a good citizen. Jack Gilford plays his friend and partner Phil Green. The two spar repeatedly over moral issues as Harry seeks to make his payroll and keep his business going. The movie repeatedly asks how important success is when we measure ourselves against our ideals. Save the Tiger explores what happens when we come to believe that the end can justify the means?

Jack Lemmon wanted to make this movie so much that he waived his usual fee and worked for scale, $165.00 a week. His performance as Harry Stoner won him an Oscar for best actor.

Soft drinks, popcorn, dessert and coffee will be provided; a $2 donation is suggested.

Sign-up begins May 1 in the church office or using the form below.

Friday Night at the Movies: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid

Friday, April 19 at 7:30 p.m. - Safford Home Theater

Our Oscar winners theme continues as Peg Schultz presents Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, starring Paul Newman and Robert Redford in the title roles. Nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director (George Roy Hill), the film took home 4 of the golden statuettes. It did even better in Britain, garnering several BAFTA awards, including Best Film, Best Director, Best Actor (Redford; Newman was also nominated), and Best Actress for Katharine Ross. Butch and “the Kid” really existed and this movie is based on fact. Did it really come out in 1969? It’s as fresh, funny, and engaging now as it was 44 years ago; the pairing of Newman and Redford is magic. A classic Western and then some!

Soft drinks, popcorn, dessert and coffee will be provided; a $2 donation is suggested.
