All Church Community Hour

This summer, we’re offering a monthly All-Church Community Hour after the 10:00 a.m. service to provide new ways for our congregation members to gather in community. On July 21, we'll celebrate Summer Camp for all! Ever wondered what it was like to go to church camp? Haven't been in a while, or went last month, and want to relive the memories? 

Join us to see memories of this year's Wesley Woods Summer Camp and hear from kids who went to camp talk about their experience!

Drawing Closer to God: Artistic Prayer

All Church Community Hour

This summer, we’re offering a monthly All-Church Community Hour after the 10:00 a.m. service to provide new ways for our congregation members to gather in community. On June 30, we explore prayer. When you think of prayer, what comes to mind? Is your image of hands folded, or a person speaking to God? Often in worship services or in the media, this is how prayer is depicted. This is one way to pray, but there are so many more!

Join us to explore different types of artistic prayer from coloring to scratch-out poetry to finger labyrinths, there are so many ways to pray! Today, there will be prayer stations set up in the gym and parlor for people of all ages before and after the 10:00 a.m. service. Try one or try them all!

Mingling Methodists

The Mingling Methodists Group is for individuals who are interested in socializing with people from church. We’ll be getting together in casual settings that will consist primarily of people’s homes. All you’ll need to do is bring yourself, your spouse, or a friend, and an appetizer and beverage to share with the group.

Lunch Bunch

Lunch BunchThis is a group of senior adults who get together the second Wednesday of each month for a social activity, fun and fellowship. Some of their activities have included a trolley ride to the Sears homes in Downers Grove, a trip to Starved Rock, Christmas in Chicago, a movie: "Singing in the Rain"; a play in Naperville and a Sing-A-Long.

Wednesday Women's Bible Study

The Wednesday Women's Bible Study will be reading Short Stories by Jesus:  The Enigmatic Parables of a Controversial Rabbi by Amy Jill-Levine this winter. This is an exploration of the historical background and spiritual meaning of Jesus' parables by one of the foremost Jewish biblical scholars, who visited our church to give a series of lectures in 2009.

The group is facilitated by Pastor Anna, Maggie Roth, and Leah Ostwald. Books are available at the meeting. Can't make it every week? Drop-ins are welcome. Childcare is provided. Cost of the book is $14 and copies are available in the church office or at the Wednesday meeting.

Adult Education Bible Study

Dr. Osvaldo Vena will continue the study of the Gospel of Mark which began last spring. Osvaldo is a professor of New Testament at Garrett Evangelical Theological Seminary, and author of Jesus, Disciple of the Kingdom: Mark's Christology for a Community in Crisis as well as a member of our congregation. Osvaldo has described Jesus as "the disciple par excellence of the kingdom of God, a model for our daily, contemporary journey as God's people." The class, which meets in Room 213 at 9:15am each Sunday, is invited to explore the meaning and context of passages that constantly yield surprises even though they seem so well known to us.

Due to scheduling conflicts, the class will take a break from meeting on September 23 and 30 and begin again on Sunday, October 7.

New participants are always welcome.

Wednesday Morning Women’s Bible Study

The Women’s Bible Study meets every Wednesday morning for a lively discussion with the aim of connecting biblical texts to their daily lives. They are now holding a 8-week session on the Book of Acts, using the study guide by Craig Keener.

Books are available for purchase for $9 in the office or during the class.

Drop-ins are welcome. All women are invited to attend!

Childcare is available upon request.

Methodist Open Golf Outing

Saturday, September 24
1:00 p.m.

Join us for our combined Men’s and Women’s Annual Golf Outing. We will have all sorts of fun prizes for golfers of all abilities. You may also wish to invite some of your friends to join us as your guests.

The outing will be held at the Downers Grove Golf Club, with tee-off times beginning at 1:00 p.m. The registration fee, which includes green fees and prize fund, is $25 per person.

Friday Night at the Movies: Bernie

Bernie

Laura Temple and Andy Wood will present Bernie, a 2011 release starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey.

Based on a true crime that took place in Carthage, TX in 1996, Black plays the title role of Bernie Tiede, a beloved assistant funeral director in the small town who befriends an elderly millionaire widow who is much unloved in the little community. Roger Ebert said that Jack Black gave one of the performances of the year. "He creates his character out of thin air, it's like nothing he's done before, and it proves that an actor can be a miraculous thing in the right role."
