Helping Kids in Our Community

healthy snacksAccording to recent data, nearly nine percent of children in DuPage County are living in poverty. The figures are alarming, but you can help. The Missions Work Area is coordinating with Downers Grove elementary school social workers to support school-age children. Stop by the Purchase with a Purpose table in the Parlor during January to donate money for the purchase of gift cards for social workers to use to obtain healthy snacks and to assist children with specific needs. Every dollar directly benefits children in Downers Grove.

Get Messy!

Get Messy! It is sometimes difficult to have children attend church. They don’t like to sit still or be quiet or just listen. Frankly, I don’t blame them. I want children to be who they are…active, creative, and lively!

Get Messy will be an opportunity for children along with their families do just that. It is on the second Sunday of each month from 11:00 AM to about 12:30 PM. The next Messy Church will be on March 9. There will be a time to make crafts as a family, a short (and lively) time of gathering, and a family friendly lunch. This time will be about building community along with thinking about that greater power that is creator and love of all.

Don’t worry about getting messy, or being too loud, or squirming too much…just come and have fun with your family! Everyone is welcome at Get Messy!

There is no cost but those attending will need to register using the form on the Get Messy web page. Contact John Smoke for more information. Get Messy will be in the church gym.

Giving Tree Thank You!

Thank you to the entire congregation for your contributions to the Giving Tree this year. We took two carloads of gifts to ChildServ and another two carloads to the People's Resource Center. Your gifts help make Christmas brighter for so many children. Your generosity is greatly appreciated!

We will continue to collect clothing items for PADs into the new year. Please bring any donations to the office. Thank you!

Family Dinner Meal Subscription

If you are interested in signing up for the Wednesday Family Dinners, Winter/Spring registration forms and payment are due January 5, 2014. Forms can be found in the church office, dinners resume January 8.

Adult Youth Volunteer Group

We are putting together a team of volunteers who have a passion for Youth Ministry. We will provide any necessary training - no experience needed. Our Youth Ministry is growing and God's Spirit is moving. Please contact JJ for more information.

Celebrate the Gift!

NativityThe birth of Jesus Christ is the birthday we celebrate every year and the reason we do this is... well, sometimes we need to be reminded to celebrate. Jesus gave to every single person that has or will exist on this planet, if only for a moment, eternal salvation. That is the great news of Christmas.

Join us as we celebrate the Gift at our ONE worship service at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, December 29. Terry McDorman will give the message.

Bring a friend, neighbor or family member who is visiting!

'The Story of Timmy Tomato' by Tommy Turnip

Environmental StewardshipTimmy (The name means one who honors God) traces his genealogy back to the Andes Mountains of Peru, South America. Timmy’s ancestors’ last name was originally Tomatl, which meant round and plump to the Aztecs. In the 16th Century, Spanish conquistadores took the tomatoes back to Europe with them. In the 18th Century, tomatoes were brought to Quebec and Louisiana by the French. Now the tomato is the most widely grown fruit (Yes, technically Timmy is a fruit.) in the Americas.

Timmy and his relatives suffer and die if the weather is too cold. For Timmy to fulfill his career objective of being a food relished by others and eaten as part of the earth’s ecosystem, he must be grown in a warm climate. Some of Timmy’s second cousins are grown in local greenhouses, and spend much more of their life in the warm confines of their home than on the road. However, Timmy, a Better Boy tomato, was conceived in California and transported to Chicago to fulfill his career objective. In fact, 40% of the world’s tomatoes are grown in California. At first, Timmy thought travel would be great. Then Timmy learned that to prepare for the trip he would have to be washed in chlorinated water, then dried with blasts of warm air and covered with wax. Timmy also learned about the large negative environmental impact this travel has on the earth and he became sad and no longer ripe for use. In particular, long-distance transportation of many of his Tomato family is contributing greatly to greenhouse gas emissions, air acidification, and smog. For example, global warming pollution for food transported by airplane is 500 times greater than pollution from transportation of locally grown foods!

Together @ 10...We are ONE

Before my son was born we attended the 8:15 service where we made some of our first friends at church. Once my son started Sunday School, we switched to the 9:30 service where we got to know other people. We also have friends who sing in the choir at 11 a.m., but we don’t see them on a regular basis since we are “9:30 folks.” Isn’t it funny how church friends are often limited to those who attend your service? Wouldn’t it be great if we could gather together for ONE special morning of worship and fellowship?

Membership Ministry announces Together @ 10… We are ONE

Invite your friends and neighbors to share in this special morning of worship and fellowship.

Sunday, January, 26, 2014 we will gather together for ONE worship service at 10:00 a.m. This is a chance to reconnect with friends who normally attend other services, or meet new people. Bring a friend and introduce them to our dynamic congregation!

The youth will be serving pancakes before and after our ONE service from 8:30 to 10:00 a.m. and 11:00 to Noon.

To remember the date 1/26, think of John 1:26 “…Among you stands one you do not know.”
