The Youth Ministry Program of First United Methodist Church in Downers Grove seeks to provide opportunities to grow in faith, connect with others, and nurture service oriented individuals to live out Christ's love in the world. We provide a number of opportunities for youth in the community.

Interfaith Thanksgiving Feast

Interfaith LogoOn Sunday, November 27th, we will be having our 3rd Annual Interfaith Thanksgiving Feast. Our hosts will be the Mohammed Webb Foundation and we will meet at the Islamic Foundation Mosque in Villa Park right after our worship ends at 10:30. (Hurry on over!!!) This event is for all church families so siblings, parents, grandparents are all welcome and encouraged to attend, even if you haven't attended an interfaith event before.

Our hosts will be providing main courses and side dishes - both traditionally American and some from their own heritage and traditions. We are asked to bring desserts. There should be no meat or meat products in the desserts to ensure they are halal. We also ask that you don't bring any alcohol.  A tour of the mosque will follow the meal. Then we will have a chance to watch afternoon prayers. This event has really been enjoyed by those who have attended in the past so we hope you can make it!

Because people are providing food, tableware, etc it would be courteous as guests to let them know how many will be coming. Please RSVP to the church office or Laura Temple with how many will be attending by Wednesday, November 23rd.

Interfaith Youth Project

Interfaith LogoThis meeting of the Interfaith Youth Project is at the Jewish Congregation Beth Shalom in Naperville. They are starting around 10:30 so please come right after worship ends at 10:30 and you won't miss too much. Parents are encouraged to come with students to see a Jewish house of worship and to learn about the Jewish faith and traditions. Our program will end around 12:45 so you can be picked up then. If you need to leave early, that's fine too. If you need a ride home, please contact  Laura Temple. You are invited to attend whether or not you have attended interfaith programs in the past. Hope to see you there!

1 Corinthians 3

Hey again,

This week is 1 Corinthians 3.

This chapter is a little harder to split up into nice little sections, so we are gonna hit up a few separate themes that come up instead.

The first theme is that of a new Christian. In the first few verses of the chapter Paul talks about the new Christians of Corinth using the analogy of a baby. When a baby is born, obviously it cannot handle a steak dinner right away. The baby has to drink milk and then eventually soft food and then finally steak (or celery, for you vegetarian readers)

1 Corinthians 2

Hey friends.

So this week is all about 1 Corinthians 2, which is one of my favorite chapters to talk about.

It splits into two major sections: v1-5 and v6-16.

The first section (v1-5) is all about proclaiming Christ.

In v3 Paul talks about coming in weakness and fear and trembling. This, plus some other verses in other books, leads some scholars to think that perhaps Paul had some sort of physical problem – like maybe a stutter or something. He points it out because he wants to emphasize that all the power of his message comes from JESUS!
