All are welcome to come.

Wednesday Evening Conversations

Devotion to Jesus

The DaVinci Code is only the most successful in a long line of books containing revisionist accounts of Christian origins. In fact, the true story is much more amazing, as Professor Hurtado, one of the world's leading New Testament historians, demonstrates in this important new course.

Devotion to Jesus

An eight-session study on the subject of "Jesus Devotion" in earliest Christianity. For us this will be more like 12-16 sessions as we break materials down to fit our Wednesday evening one hour time slot. Course materials are adaptable to different class lengths. For example, each lesson can easily be split in two to accommodate shorter sessions, such as a 45-minute class.

Wednesday Morning Conversations

BreathePastor Jim McDonald will lead a series of discussions based on Rob Bell's Nooma video Breathe on Wednesday mornings at 10am.

Breathing is the most natural of physical processes; we don't even think about doing it. But, as Rob Bell points out, the word for "breath" in the Bible is the same as the word for "spirit." It's part of what it means to be human and yet it also represents our spiritual reality as well. In these conversations, Pastor Jim will use the video to helps us reflect on the tension between our physical and spiritual lives, on what it means to be human made in the image of God.

Transcendence & Transformation

Transcendence and Transformation

One cannot understand religion without understanding the mind and brain,
and one cannot understand the mind and brain without understanding religion.

All Church Book Read

Andrew NewbergIn September, Andrew Newberg, M.D., will be leading a two-day workshop at First United, exploring the fascinating link between religious experience and the biology of the brain. He will be using the latest advances in neuroscience to help us understand what is happening in our brains when we experience the transcendent as tangibly real. This is not a reductionist exercise designed to discredit religious faith. Newberg does not believe that neuroscience can say whether God exists or not, but he does believe that God seems to be hard-wired into the human brain, finding "echoes of the infinite buried within its convoluted folds."

To help us prepare for this stimulating workshop, all members of the church are invited to participate in reading and discussing two books by Andrew Newberg that explore in depth his neurological studies of religious experience and his ideas concerning the biological importance of religious belief in healing our bodies and minds. There will be two sets of discussions in June and August. Books can be purchased online or in bookstores. Contact the church office by June 3 if you want the church to order a copy for you.
