Raising White Kids: An Online Book Study

What do children need to understand about racism? How can white parents engage their white children in age appropriate conversations about racial injustice? Dr. Jennifer Harvey explores these questions and more in her book Raising White Kids: Bringing Up Children in a Racially Unjust America. Join us for this eight-week study!

For the first seven weeks, we'll work through the book, one chapter a week. We'll choose a weekly takeaway we can apply in our own families and check in with each other on how the effort went the next week before engaging in the new chapter. In the final week, we'll talk about engaging in conversations on race, not only from the perspective of being parents, but of being Christians and how our theology can help.

Pastor Anna will be facilitating these conversations and especially invites parents and teachers to participate!

Choose from one of the two group times:
• Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. from June 17 - August 5

• Fridays at Noon from June 19 - August 7

All church members are invited to participate in Becoming A Beloved Community, a number of activities sponsored by the Adult Education Work Area.

1. On Saturday, January 18 we will watch a movie together. Join us at 5:30 p.m. in the Gym to get started.
   • Adults will see the movie The Hate You Give in the gym. There will be an optional dinner.
   • Children will watch The Color of Friendship (an old-school Disney film) in the Theater (Room 217) and eat a pizza dinner. Childcare for younger children will be provided upon request.
2. On Sunday, January 19, we'll be joined by Michael Childress, the NAACP President for DuPage County, who will speak at noon in the gym. Lunch will be available before this if you preorder. Childcare will be provided upon request.

Sign-up by January 15 for the meal with the movie, Sunday lunch, and/or daycare in the parlor before and after worship services this week and next Sunday, January 12. More details will be available shortly.

The group meets from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. every Wednesday online and is facilitated by Pastor Anna, Maggie Roth, and Leah Ostwald. Can't make it every week? Drop-ins are welcome. Our congregation is part of the United Methodist Church. Like every other denomination, we have some shared beliefs, expectations, and practices. The United Methodist Church prides itself on "connectionalism" and the ways that we are connected across space to one another. Conferences are some of the ways in which we stay connected. There are many conferences - charge conferences, annual conferences, jurisdictional conferences, and general conferences. What happens at each of these conferences and who's allowed to participate?
